Cardinal Flower – Lobelia cardinalis
Brilliant scarlet-red flowers make this clump forming, tap-rooted perennial a show stopper for both people and pollinators. Butterflies and hummingbirds find it irresistible. Grow in shaded to partly sunny exposures with moist, humus-rich soil, will tolerate sunny sites if there is enough moisture. Blooms for up to six weeks August – September, with height between 2 – 4 ft. Considered short-lived, but will self-seed in favorable spots. Lobelias produce a secondary compound known as “lobeline,” which deters herbivores.
