Aquilegia Online Submissions: Information and Application Form

Aquilegia supports the mission of the Colorado Native Plant Society (CoNPS) through the publication of information relating to the knowledge and conservation of Colorado native plants. Our target audience ranges from native plant enthusiasts to professional botanists. CoNPS encourages the submission of articles, photographs, field reports, research reports, original artwork, and other topics relating to Colorado native plants. Contributors grant CoNPS the right to publish and/or distribute submitted material in our magazine, Aquilegia, on the CoNPS website and social media, and other CoNPS literature. Acceptance will be based on space and appropriateness. All submissions are subject to editing for content, grammar, length, relevance, and photo resolution, as necessary. Basic Style Guidelines for Aquilegia

Aquilegia averages 550 words and 1-3 images per page. Most articles are 1-4 pages long. Submissions outside these parameters will be considered and used as appropriate.

Formatting for Authors

• Left justify text.
• Use only formatting that is essential to the meaning of the text and use the same font throughout.
• Single space between sentences.
• Supply text as an MS Word document or compatible format.

Style and Usage

Following are basic style guidelines for Aquilegia. Readability considerations drive the publication’s style. Newsletter staff reserves the right to modify these guidelines, which are loosely based on the Chicago Manual of Style and Webster’s Dictionary to maintain consistent publishing standards. Single space after all punctuation, including periods.

  • Place colons and semicolons within closing quotation marks (in general).
  • Use American spelling, unless quoting from a publication.
  • Format dates as Month Day, Year. The year is followed by a comma when included within a
    sentence.
  • Use an en-dash between numbers and in time periods, without spaces on each end.
    For example: 7:00–9:30 pm.
  •  Use small caps to denote am and pm in time, without periods.
  • Use single quotation marks (‘) for quotes within quotes.
  • Do not use a space between words or numbers and en-dashes or em-dashes.
  • Use a serial, or Oxford, comma in a list (e.g., “his, hers, and theirs”).
  • Put “i.e.” and “e.g.” in parentheses, followed by a comma, with their examples (e.g., like this).
  • Do not use an apostrophe for plurals of capital letters (“the RRRs” or the 1900s),
    unless to indicate possessive.
  • Spell out numbers zero through nine. Spell out numbers at beginning of a sentence.
  • In scientific findings, use the number and symbol (e.g, 39%). In a regular sentence use the number
    and word (e.g., nine percent or 50 percent).
  • Italicize titles of books or other publications capitalizing, all principal words (but not articles).
  • Capitalize product names (but do not include in quotations marks).
  • Bulleted lists are formatted flush left to the preceding paragraphs and are introduced with a colon,
    like this:
    • Capitalized and followed by a semicolon;
    • The next to the last item in a list is followed by a semicolon and the word “and”; and
    • The last item in the list is followed by a period.

Bibliography Style

• Place all references at the end of the article (no footnotes).
• Cite references by number rather than by name
• Use the following general format for references:
• Doe JE, Author MA, and Someone TD. 2020. The general reference style. J Meth. 45:66-80.
• Include publisher name for books.
• Italicize book titles, but not chapter titles.
• Capitalize principal words in book and journal titles, but not article or chapter titles.

Photographs and Other Images

• Supply photos and other images as individual files separate from the text document.
• Send the highest resolution image possible. In general, the file should be at least 1-2 Mb in size and at least 300 dpi)
• Include the name of the photographer or any other copyright information.
• Provide a caption for each image.
