Tufted hairgrass – Deschampsia cespitosa
A deer resistant, *cool season grass that prefers a partially shaded site and moist, organically rich soils. This clump-forming grass begins as a green color and turns gold as the season progresses. Numerous flowering stems rise to form a delicate cloud of subtle colors hovering above the foliage. Used as a larval host for many butterflies. It has fibrous roots and prefers loamy soil with clay and sand. *Note: cool season, or C3, grasses begin growing actively in late winter to early spring, flowering and setting seed in the spring to early summer.
